Well, looks like the old nightmare is waking up again. Reports say that Capcom is working to bring back Resident Evil Zero Remake and bring back a GameCube classic to the PS5 player. This remake, under the secret development name Project Chamber for many years, was very aptly named as a reference to the lead character, Rebecca Chambers. Following the success of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4, this feels like the next big step.
I remember playing Resident Evil Zero years back on my cousin’s GameCube. The tight corridors, the eerie soundscape, and that strange Ecliptic Express train ride were all enough to make me jump out of my chair. And so, hearing the news of a remake for PS5 fills me with excitement at the prospect of walking through that same fear with better graphics and gameplay.
A long-awaited remake of both Resident Evil Code: Veronica and Resident Evil Zero had long been expected by fans. Finally, it looks like Capcom finally listened. The Zero remake is reported to be far into production, with new motion capture sessions rumored to be happening in 2024.
Actor John McLaren, whose credits include Star-Lord in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Far Cry 5, is said to be one of the actors involved. His name, associated with “Project Chamber” suggests he might portray Billy Coen, the ex-Marine who teams up with Rebecca in the story.
Motion capture work for the remake is consigned to Beyond Capture Studios, the same team behind Resident Evil 4 Remake and Street Fighter 6. Expect hyper-realistic character movements, a step up in facial animations, and jaw-dropping visuals. Some fans may dislike that Capcom has recast the voice actors, but honestly, it might work miracles. Capcom has done good by and large to preserve the soul of past stories while adding new depth.
In terms of the story, the insiders say that Resident Evil Zero Remake will remain close to the original, while expanding on important moments and giving characters more emotional depth. Scenes in Rebecca’s story as a rookie member of S.T.A.R.S. will see more detailed attention, as will her first meeting with Billy on the Ecliptic Express.
It seems that Capcom has its remakes under a steady plan. Rumors say RE Requiem may come out by 2026, Code: Veronica Remake in 2027, and Zero Remake in 2028. That’s like a full map for the people who love the series’s older games.
Personally, I’m a fan of how Capcom is doing the remakes: redoing something isn’t just carbon-copying the old way. It enhances gameplay, improves control, smooths everything out; yet it retains that special atmosphere—creepy and isolated—that sets this series apart from the rest.
With the dual-character system, Zero was a big deal. You switched between Rebecca and Billy to solve puzzles and fight zombies in confined spaces. This heightened the tension, as one mistake could cost you dearly. I’m pretty curious to see how Capcom will use all the new features on the PS5 to improve upon this mechanic.
The game’s tone is still somewhat murky. Will it maintain the slow, slowly building tension of the original, or will it take on more of an action feel like more recent Resident Evil titles? Regardless, the horror train appears to be moving once again.
Assuming Capcom does it like they did in the last few remakes, we should get something that looks gorgeous, plays well, and still scares the heck out of us. But, the big question now is: when that Ecliptic Express returns, are you ready to board? You may also be interested in: Nintendo Switch 2 Question: Does the $449 Cost Match the Strength and Titles?
