9 Years Later Justice Still Pending in the 2017 Shooting of Kamilion Milly Jenkins in Michigan City

It has been nine years since the 2017 shooting of Kamilion Milly Jenkins, and her family is still waiting for answers.

On March 28, 2017, what was supposed to be a normal ride home became a nightmare for one Michigan City family. That evening, 15 year old Kamilion Milly Jenkins was sitting in a car near Grace Street and Holliday Street in Michigan City, Indiana. She was with two adults and a one year old baby. Around 8:45 p.m., their car stopped because a train was passing.

Then everything changed.

Another vehicle pulled up next to them. Someone inside opened fire. Milly and 28 year old Cherita Wright were hit. The baby and the other people in the car were not injured.

The driver did not waste time. He drove straight to the Michigan City Police Department. Two officers who were walking out of the station and paramedics who arrived right after started trying to save them.

Milly was pronounced dead at the scene. Cherita Wright survived after getting treatment at a nearby hospital.

Police later shared that the shooting may have been a case of mistaken identity. The shooter might have been aiming for someone else.

As of 2026, there have been no arrests in the Kamilion Milly Jenkins case. The Michigan City shooting investigation is still open.

I have followed stories like this for years, and honestly, it never feels normal reading about a 15 year old losing her life like that. It always hits different when it is someone so young, someone who still had school, dreams, and plans ahead.

Milly was a freshman at Westville High School and played on the school basketball team. Teachers and staff described her as friendly, full of energy, and always smiling. She was the kind of student who made others feel comfortable. Her nickname Milly was known all around the school.

She worked part time at McDonald’s and Kidz Paradise. She loved basketball, singing, dancing, and spending time with her family. She also adored her dog Fat Momma.

She was active at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where many people remember her kind heart and positive spirit.

Kamilion Milly Jenkins was born on July 13, 2001. Her visitation was held on April 7, 2017. Funeral services took place on April 8 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She was buried at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Her family has faced more pain over the years. In October 2021, the City of Michigan City placed a memorial street sign at the intersection where she was killed. Just days after the sign was revealed, her brother Jose Jenkins Jr. died after being hit by a semi truck on Interstate 94.

Even after almost a decade, the family continues to push for justice for Kamilion Milly Jenkins. They have organized walks, spoken publicly, and kept her name alive in the community.

Many people still share messages online. Some pray for answers. Others simply say her name and ask for justice.
