Chandrayaan-3 Mission budget

Chandrayaan-3 is the third and most recent lunar mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation under the Chandrayaan series. It has a lander named ‘Vikram’ and a rover named ‘Pragyan’, but no orbiter. The Chandrayaan-3 propulsion module is like a communication relay satellite.

In December 2019, ISRO requested initial funding for Rs. 75 crore (US$9.4 million), out of which Rs. 60 crore was for machinery, equipment, and capital expenditures, and the remaining Rs. 15 crore for revenue expenditure. In 2020, ISRO then-chairman K. Sivan told reporters that the cost of the Chandrayaan-3 mission was around Rs. 615 crore (US$90 million in 2023). Out of which the lander, rover, and propulsion module cost Rs. 250 crore, and the launch service cost Rs. 365 crore.

ISRO director K. Sivan gave this report before the COVID pandemic, so there is a strong possibility that the budget has increased. Chandrayaan-3 was originally scheduled to launch in 2021, but delays pushed it to July 14, 2023. The Chandrayaan-3 cost is much more cost-effective than that of Chandrayaan-2. The Chandrayaan-2 mission cost Rs. 978 crore, including Rs. 603 crore for the orbiter, lander, rover, navigation, and ground support network, and Rs. 375 crore for the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle.

A successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 will make India the fourth country to land on the Moon.

Jitendra Singh, the Union’s state minister for science and technology, stated, “After the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the surface of the Moon, the rover, which has six wheels, will come out and is expected to work for 14 days on the Moon. With the support of multiple cameras on the rover, we will be able to receive images.”

ISRO chairman S. Somnath recently stated, “The lander and the rover will stay on the moon for 14 days until sunlight is there. When there is no sunlight, the rover’s small solar panel will generate power to charge the battery for the next 14 days until light returns. The temperature there goes down to minus 40 degrees, and in such an environment, there is no guarantee that the battery and electronics will survive, but we did some tests. We get the feeling that it will survive even in such harsh conditions”.

During Chandrayaan-2, due to a last-minute glitch, it crashed before landing on the surface of the Moon. In Chandrayaam-3 3, the primary objective of the mission is to have a soft landing on the Moon’s surface. ISRO has set three objectives for the mission, which are:

  • Getting a lander to land safely and softly on the surface of the Moon.
  • Observing and demonstrating the rover’s loitering capabilities on the Moon.
  • In situ observation & conducting experiments on the materials available on the lunar surface to better understand the composition of the Moon.
